End of lease
My lease expired yesterday and we have nowhere to go. Can the landlord come in and throw us out without papers?

No. Read your lease. Most leases convert to a month to month tenancy upon expiration.
Did the landlord give you notice that he is terminating the lease?
ANY question on law needs to include your general locale as laws vary by area.

He cannot make you leave without a court order. Nor can he just let himself into without notice except in an emergency. If he comes and tries to force you out call the police.
Lease Termination
While you are supposed to leave, he can't just kick you out. You do need to pay rent, though he may not accept it. Why did you not prepare for this?
And please don't start a new thread for follow-up. Just reply to this thread as you did.

He will have to file for eviction in court, he can not legally force you out, if he tries, just call the police

If the lease doesn't automatically convert to month-to-month then when it ends, it ends. I think (though not positive, so maybe someone else can confirm) that the end of such a lease may be considered to be the written notice to vacate that the landlord must give you, so his next step is to get a court order to have you evicted followed by getting the sherriff to actually do it. This may take a week or so, but maybe less. So be prepared for all your stuff to be out on the street at any time. Obviously your prime objective today is to find other accommodations, or negotiate an extension with the landlord.

Illinois law wasn't clear on this. My research indicates that you may be right. On the other hand, its unlikely the lease was silent on this point. So its real important that the OP read the lease carefully ASAP.
But I agree that it will not take long to get an eviction order so she needs to take action immediately. I asked the question of why she didn't prepare for this.

I say it's impossible to know without seeing the lease - is there an automatic "move out" at the end of the lease?
Scott asks a good question - why did it come down to this?
