    1986 civic si
I have a 86 honda civic si. The car starts runs for a few seconds and then dies. It won't start again until the cey is turned off and back on. It will do this about 2or3 times before it stays running. I was told the fuel pump was going bad. Is this possible or is it something else?

If the CEL does not consistently come on for 2 seconds and then go out, when the ignition switch is turned to ON (Position II), then the ECM is failing. In this case, simply install an exact Honda Part No. replacement.

You can hear the fuel pump charge the system each time the key is turned on. After the engine starts if you even touch the gas pedal it also quits running .this is after you manage to get it to stay running . After a couple of times of this it will stay running and does fine until the next time you leave the car sit for a few hours.that's what made me think fuel pump. Just want to make sure before I buy a costly fuel pump. Thanks for any advice.

Replacing the Ignition Control Module (ICM) should solve the problem. Apply a thin, even coat of silicone heat transfer compound to the back of the new ICM. I would also replace the coil, rotor, and cap, while you have the distributor open.
