We are planning to move into our next house in a few weeks. We just had the inspection done and found that the house, built in 1986, has it's original boiler & hot water heater. Our inspector recommended that we have the sellers replace them since they are reaching the end of their life expectancy. The sellers refused, but offered a $500 credit. That credit covers the water heater, but how much should we expect to pay if the boiler should go? The home is heated by natural gas. What is the life span of a boiler? I am not aware of any maintenance done to the system.

I don't know what you mean by 'the boiler'. We have natural gas and have the furnace and hot water heater only. There is no boiler.

Are you in the UK ? I sort of know what you mean by 'boiler' if you are in the UK.

That boiler is not that old. They can last for 30 to 40 years depending how they are taken care of. There are more efficient ones available now but you would need to find out how efficient the old one is to see if it is worth replacing.
