Smoke alarms going off for no reason
Our smoke detector is chirping, usually starting early morning and chirping for several hours then stops and starts again next morning. I have changed the battery 3 times and it still chirps. What can I try to get it to stop?

I had the same problem. Since the detector was nearly 15 years old, I replaced it. I'm afraid that is your only solution.

Mine have the same problem, but they are house-wired (despite having batteries and looking like $10 ones from a hardware store). I haven't solved it yet.

These detectors are not expensive if you like your kids...
New detectors are easy to replace and install...

Smokes have a finite life and are cheap. Just replace them.

Are these smoke alarms interconnected and if so, how many are on the chain? Too many on the chain and/or mixing brands or incompatible series within the brand on the chain can give interesting problems. I have run into the situation of too many alarms on one chain and nobody could figure out what was causing so many problems like this until I came on and read the instructions. I also have run into the problem you are describing on systems that are only a year old. I changed the detector out and everything was fine, I put that same detector back into another house as a test and it is working fine. (Disclaimer: Same owner, different smoke alarm system.) I have had more headaches with smoke alarms than any other type of electrical system, and CO detectors are the worst. Just don't mix brands or unlisted combinations of detectors on the same interconnected chain.
