Yesterday I compressed my c drive--now today when I start computer it says bootmgr is compressed press ctrl-alt-delete to restart... I do that buit it just repeats the same thing--tryed my win 7 home cd but said this version of system recovery isn't compatible w the version of windows you are trying to repair--try recovery disc thas compatible.. I tried backup disc & repair disc also image backup but wanted location of system image--network folder?--said error occurred network name couldn't be found. I cld Microsoft but they just tried to sell me a warranty deal for $150 which I don't have--can anyone help? Using really old computer right now & it fails every few minutes & couldn't look up any advice---HELP!!

Might see if you can boot into last known good configuration. When you first turn on your PC continue hitting F8 (could be another function key, but most of the time it's F8). When you get to a screen where you can choose between a couple different safe modes there should be an option to boot in to last known good configuartion. If that doesn't work try booting to safe mode, and un-compressing the files in the Windows folder. Should never compress your entire C: drive as there are system files that cannot be read if they are compressed.

Farva, chances are, the OP cannot do as you suggested as bootmgr is the file that provides those boot options.

To the OP:

First make sure there is no additional media in the computer before booting. This includes CD's, USB Drives, SD cards, floppy disks, etc. If you are familiar with computer BIOS's make sure your Hard Disk is set as the first boot device.

If these don't work please post back with the following information:
Which operating system your machine has installed.
Computer Model Number.

I checked & there's no additional media in the computer, still can't get anywhere though. It's a HP model# a60100n. Thanks so much for your help. Sorry I took so long to answer but my old computer crashes if you even breath wrong... Marleyjeanne

There is a chance of corruption due to virus infection or crapware, however due to the computers age and model, I would first check the hard drive. It is not uncommon for them to fail especially in computers that overheat easily.

Checking your hard drive is not extremely difficult, see this article here if you can get it to boot, or here if it will not boot.

If the hard drive tests good then I recommend a re-install. There are some other issues that may contribute, however it is easier to reinstall than to troubleshoot and repair or are rather rare in occurrence.

I forgot to mention, there is a chance of it overheating. It would get very hot on the bottom and probably in the keyboard. The computer would just shut down, not necessarily crash, but completely power off.
