Does my Honda Accord need an undercoating to protect from the wintry salt errosion?
    Hello,
I live in Florida and I plan on buying a new 2007 Honda Accord within the next month. I will also be moving to Connecticut after two months for good. My question is: Do I need a protective undercoating spray on the underneath of the car to protect it from wintry salt errosions? If such undercoating is needed, do I buy the car from CT and is the undercoating free in the North from dealers?

    Please advice.
    Thank you.

If you are going to get undercoating, try and get it done at the factory; i.e. before the car is even delivered to the dealer. If it's done by the dealer, moisture and dirt can be sealed in and the benefits are reduced substantially. I got this advice first-hand from the head of corrosion research for the Air Force, Wright-Patterson AFB.

Here in Quebec, we have special oil sprayed every winter to prevent that.

Honda does not offer a factory undercoating option (even if the dealer says they do). All Hondas already have undercoating from the factory. I would advise against any additional undercoating as it will usually create more problems by retaining moisture. It may provide some additional sound deadening which isn't bad. Some undercoating jobs spray inside the doors which clogs the drainholes, making them rust more quick.

Pretty much all honda now come with factory undercoating for every inch of the undercarriage. Even my 05 honda accord has it. My vehicle has been in Massachusetts since the day I bought and the undercarriage is as shiny as the day I bought from the dealer. Just remember when the winter months are over just take a garden hose and spray the underneath of the undercarriage completely because some salt can build on some suspension compenents and could stay there for maybe a year after the winter months are over and could cause a little surface rust even if its protected with undercoating. As long as you do this after the winter months are over your vehicle should have not rust problems under the carriage. Salt is number 1 reason why all vehicles rust in new england and the ones in the south and west don't
