    Can 1440 watts be on a switch and not get hot

    All by itself, 1440 watts means nothing. Voltage or Amperage and the type switch you are using would really help us.

    For example if your voltage is 120 volts then you are running 12 amps through the switch.

    If the switch is listed for 15 amps, you should not notice any particular heat issues.

    However if you are using some type specialty switch like a room sensor that monitors movement and turns the lights on or a switch for a fan to control a fan that is not listed for use with a fan, then sure it will heat up.
