Why is he acting like this?
I told a guy that I liked him, and here's what happened:
"This is a secret, so don't tell anyone this." I whispered.
"Okay, I won't." he said.
"I like you and I think you're cute, what do you think of me?"
"Well, you're awesome. I like you."
"Are you being honest?"
"Yeah, I like you."
I was so happy. But the next thing I did was pretty stupid. My friend said maybe he meant only as a friend, and I asked him again. He said. "I don't know," I think I freaked him out by asking twice. What do you think?

I think you are too young to understand what is going on with this kind of communication, and the same for your 'friend'.
He really didn't know what to say and probably forgot his reply right after you and he spoke.
So, I would forget it. You will have a lot of encounters like this over the next few years, but grow up a little more before you do, please.
How old are you by the way ?

This year, I'll be advancing to high school. As well for the guy. Thanks for the advice.

He didn't know exactly why you told him this "secret", or what he was supposed to do about it. What did you expect him to do?

Well maybe this is the only 'dialogue' they had so he is probably confused, and I can almost see the look on his face 'what does she mean, what is this about?'
'Just" going into high school, so you are, what 12 or l3?
You are going to receive a lot of adult comments, so don't be surprised that you don't like the advice you get from this.

Well, yes, I see where you are coming from now at fourteen but still, direct communication is better.

I don't quite understand what you mean. Why does the form of communication matter?

What was he supposed to say? You asked if he likes you. He was put on the spot. He probably thought you meant if he liked you as a person, as a friend, but when you asked a second time, he thought "wow, this girl is needy", and got turned off.
That's how I see it, but hey, none of us can tell you exactly why he replied how he did. Only he knows why. We can only guess.

Let me put it this way. Anyone coming up to me and whispering in my ear that they like me would really creep me out. On the other hand, someone walking up and saying quite pleasantly 'i really like you, you know, because... ' is a more natural approach and invites conversation. Inviting conversation is what you want to happen, then you can go on from there into friendly chatter.

Any time secrets and "I told my friend and she said" are involved it's bad news.
