    Leaking amniotic fluid
My niece is 15 years old. Currently in hospital. She's 29 weeks, she is leaking amniotic fluid and the baby's heart rate is low. I'm concerned for their safety.

Why would you be concerned, if that is the diagnosis and she is in the hospital. Are you worried she won't get proper care? Are you the main contact for her care?

No, I'm not worried that she won't get proper care. I'm concerned that the baby's health is in danger as well as the mother. What are the chances that the baby will survive? Will her age at 15 make a difference?

Amy questions regarding this should be directed towards the attending physician. Any answers to your question are difficult on the Internet.

Is there any reason why you cannot speak to her doctor?

What is the heart rate? A neonates normal heart rate can run between 110 - 160 beats per minute without being in danger.

At 29 weeks she is past the point of non-viability, so delivery is possible but the baby would be transferred to the NICU.

Is her age a factor? Certainly! A 15 year old's body isn't designed to carry a baby. Her body is still growing and shouldn't be taxed to the limit by carrying another human life.
