Govt obtains wide AP phone records in probe
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department secretly obtained two months of telephone records of reporters and editors for The Associated Press in what the news cooperative's top executive called a "massive and unprecedented intrusion" into how news organizations gather the news.
The records obtained by the Justice Department listed incoming and outgoing calls, and the duration of each call, for the work and personal phone numbers of individual reporters, general AP office numbers in New York, Washington and Hartford, Conn., and the main number for AP reporters in the House of Representatives press gallery, according to attorneys for the AP.
In all, the government seized those records for more than 20 separate telephone lines assigned to AP and its journalists in April and May of 2012. The exact number of journalists who used the phone lines during that period is unknown but more than 100 journalists work in the offices whose phone records were targeted on a wide array of stories about government and other matters.
In a letter of protest sent to Attorney General Eric Holder on Monday, AP President and Chief Executive Officer Gary Pruitt said the government sought and obtained information far beyond anything that could be justified by any specific investigation. He demanded the return of the phone records and destruction of all copies.
" There can be no possible justification for such an overbroad collection of the telephone communications of The Associated Press and its reporters. These records potentially reveal communications with confidential sources across all of the newsgathering activities undertaken by the AP during a two-month period, provide a road map to AP's newsgathering operations, and disclose information about AP's activities and operations that the government has no conceivable right to know," Pruitt said.
The government would not say why it sought the records.
I'm sure Obama knows nothing about this. Ok Tal, spin away...

If Obamas supporters were also targeted with his enemies for tax status it was hardly JUST the right.
From your own link,
Among those whose phone numbers were obtained were five reporters and an editor who were involved in the May 7, 2012 story.
The Obama administration has aggressively investigated disclosures of classified information to the media and has brought six cases against people suspected of providing classified information, more than under all previous presidents combined.
William Miller, a spokesman for Machen, said Monday that in general the U.S. attorney follows "all applicable laws, federal regulations, and Department of Justice policies when issuing subpoenas for phone records of media organizations" but he would not address questions about the specifics of the AP records. "We do not comment on ongoing criminal investigations," Miller said in an e-mail.

Um Tal, two different abuses of power. That he doesn't give a rip about anyone's rights should open your eyes. But go on, keep excusing the inexcusable, we have your back.

The gun-running fail, nationalizing the auto and insurance companies, the 'enemies list,' using covert operatives for photo ops, lying about blown operations, attempts at gun registration/confiscation, illegally intimidating political opponents, monitoring the press. All Barry needs now is an ugly green suit with eight pounds of gold trim and he can be like his departed hero Hugo.
Even the National Journal finds him losing credibility.

Are we to believe that AP was the only news agency targeted with their irrational obsession with FOX ?

Fun fact, Obama's Organizing for America - which also runs his overtly political Twitter account - is also a 501(c)(4) organization. Apparently the IRS didn't target it for scrutiny.

Hello, again:
Pursuant to the IRS:
Social welfare organizations: Civic leagues or organizations not organized for profit but operated exclusively for the promotion of SOCIAL WELFARE...
In MY view, the word "exclusive", doesn't mean "primarily", but I'm not in government..
I don't know why the taxpayers have to subsidize political crap. If I remember correctly, tom is against the tax exemption churches get. Seems like he'd be against this one too.

I'm against all of the tax exemptions . My goal is the abolishment of this power hungry corrupt bureaucracy .
Through the nanny state, bureaucracy has constantly expanded, the result of the rising number of social and economic functions taken on by the state. But when bureaucracy reaches a certain degree of mass and power, it becomes almost automatically resistant to any will, including the elected will of the people.
Robert Nisbet argued in 1953 the rise of the powerful modern state had eroded the sources of community;the family, the neighborhood, the church etc. As the traditional ties that bind fell away, the human impulse toward community led people to turn even more to the government itself, allowing statism, even totalitarianism,to flourish.
Few things so clearly separate the liberalism of the nineteenth century from twentieth-century liberalism and progressivism as the nearly complete acceptance by the latter of bureaucracy......
More and more, I suspect, revolt in the West in whatever form it takes–peaceful and political, violent and terroristic, or military–will consist of hatred of bureaucracy and passionate desire to destroy it. It is the immensity of bureaucracy at the present time, and the growing immensity of opposition to it, that promises a drive toward total reconstruction that must itself be laden with implications of despotism.
(Quest for Community )
But now this IRS has been empowered with the enforcement of the whole medical care system in the country on top of their ever expanding power over your purse. If this is the type of behavior we can expect from them then we know where the death panel will reside.

That's a side issue, like Pelosi blaming SCOTUS. We cannot have the IRS targeting people for their political views and it's clear this is getting much, much deeper and more troubling by the hour.
They leaked info on Karl Rove's group after ProPublica requested it.
They leaked confidential info on the National Organization for Marriage "just a few months after Joseph Solmonese, then president of the HRC, was appointed a national co-chair of the Obama reelection campaign."
They leaked the entire donor list of the Texas Public Policy Foundation.
They allegedly had a "working group" just to scrutinize conservative groups:
“More than a year ago, one of these guys, really a slip of the tongue, [said] ‘Yeah we have this new working group that’s really looking at all these conservative organizations,’” Backer said. “And that’s when we knew it was gonna be a problem.”
And on top of it all top IRS officials knew about it, including the current head, and denied it.
The corruption is the issue and nothing else.

I just wonder what the effect of all of this had on the 2012 elections . Clearly after the 2010 mid-terms the TP was riding high. Then they sort of fell off the radar last year. Was this intimidation responsible ,or did it play a role ?

Some of this info most definitely led to smears of Romney.

Back to, wait, which scandal? Oh yeah, snooping on the media and other heavy-handed attempts by this admin to control the message...
Remember back in February when Bob Woodward went public about the White House threatening him after he said they were not telling the truth about the sequester? The media was not too kind to Woodward after that...
Would all the reporters who savaged Bob Woodward now like to apologize?

Are we to believe you are on the side of the lame stream media? Or see a tool to make noise about the President yet again?
I think it's the latter.
