How long can I leave my teacup Maltese home I'm out for 8 hr working? (how should it be done?)

Just so I understand, you work an 8-hour day (plus a commute, I would think), you already have the puppy, you want to know what to do about the 8+ hours when you're gone?

I think you should not have a puppy. Getting a puppy since it is cute, putting in in a cage, going away for 8 hrs+ is not what I would consider nice for the dog. How would you feel alone in a cage for 8 hrs. Sounds like prison to me!

I leave her at my sister house for now but I feel bad so I might leave it home for a little and I'll come home for my lunch break is that good or it's to long??

I'm a big proponent of not having a puppy if you work long hours.
I got my Great Dane puppy when my husband was applying for residency. I work 9-12 hour days depending on the day and it would not be good for him, but my husband wasn't working.

Once my husband got his residency Apollo was 7 months old and fine to be left alone while we both worked. I never would have gotten him if I had to leave him alone when he was young.

The general rule is that a puppy can be left crated (and you should definitely crate, puppies get into everything, and being left on their own with access to electrical plugs and other things, is dangerous) for one hour for every month of age.

So let's say your puppy is 2 months old. That means that puppy can be left in the crate for 2 hours before it needs to be relieved, walked, fed, etc. When puppy is 3 months old it can be crated for 3 hours before a break, then 4 hours at 4 months and so on.

I would seriously consider leaving him with your sister until he's older.

It is ideal if there's someone that can spend all day at home with the puppy,but if that were the case, most people wouldn't even get dogs, at least not those of us that have to work for a living.

If you insist of keeping your puppy at home alone while you work, find someone that can come to your home during the day to take the puppy out of the crate, walk it, feed it, let it do its thing. There are ways to deal with having a puppy while you're working, but you do have to make sure the puppies needs are being met.

You're welcome, but I still would like to know why you made up this puppy. You were asked questions about this puppy, you stated that you currently have this puppy, you gave us an entire story, and then posted another thread:

It's upsetting me as well. Many people posted on this thread, asked questions that would enable us to help, put in the time and effort, and now we're being told this dog doesn't even exist? Why make up a puppy? Why go through all the trouble of telling a story about how the dog spends it's days at your sisters house while you work, it's a little female, it's a few months old, it's a maltese.

You even asked point blank if this is a dog the OP currently has, and she answered yes.

I can't speak for everyone, but once a poster is caught in a lie, I have a very hard time believing anything they post after that.

Why bother asking a question when you're not telling the truth?
