    Being overweight during Pregnancy
    Hello,
    Good day to you.
I am Leya Shaifullah. I am 29yrs old and 5'-3" height. I am from Bangladesh and need your help. I became pregnant on 3rd week of October 2012 and now I am running on 25 weeks. This is my First Pregnancy. I was 52kg of weight before got pregnant. I gained weight as following: 7 weeks-52kg, 12 weeks-57kg, 16 weeks-59kg, 20 weeks-63kg, 25 weeks-66 kg. During this time I was compelled to eat more and not to do any kind of work. Now I found that I become over-weighted. What's the bad effects of this overweight and How can I overcome from this problem?

Who 'compelled you to eat more and not to do any kind of work' and why?
Are you being seen by a doctor? Having blood pressure taken? Any signs of edema such as swollen ankles?

    Thanks for your concern.

My Relatives forced me to do that. Because they said us that I need to eat for two people and as much as I can. They also said if I do any work, it can harm me, even it can bring damage to my baby.
I visited doctor regularly. She is an Obs-Gyn and said everything is all right until the last visit on 10th march 2013 when she said I became overweight. Blood pressure is normal till now and there is no sign of swollen ankles.

Your relatives are incorrect. Walk every day, and at a good pace. This will help strengthen your stomach muscles for labor. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables and nuts and seeds, and avoid starches and sugars. Drink lots of water. Old wisdom was to gain lots of weight, but new wisdom is to stay as trim and active as possible, and that will make a healthy baby plus ensure an easier labor and delivery.

First, don't panic about gaining more than the recommended amount of weight. Many women gain more than their doctors prefer and it ends up just fine. At the same time, you need to stop giving in to pressure to eat more than you want to and more than you should. You need more than when you weren't pregnant but certainly not double your usual! I would imagine that as Bangledesh has seen some very difficult times with food shortages in their history, your relatives are perhaps excessively concerned about you eating enough. Here in America, older people who lived through the depression, or lived through war in foreign countries, are much the same way - pushing everyone to eat enough all the time in fear there may not be enough tomorrow.

Don't try to loose weight while you're pregnant - just stop overeating. One though is that if your husband's mother or sister, or some other family member is behind the pushiness for you to eat more, perhaps you could invite that family member to your next medical appointment. Ask your doctor to explain what you should eat, and the fact that you've gained a little too much so need to eat a bit less moving forward. If they hear it from the doctor, they are more apt to stop forcing food on you.
