    Statue of limitations Manitoba
I have just received a call from a collection agency stating that we owe Manitoba Public Insurance for a fine that occurred in 1998. 14 plus years later! We have moved to a different provience 13 years ago. In Manitoba we never received warnings or have we ever received a warning here. I think we paid for it... it has been forever since this occurred. I do not have a recipt saying we did because I would thrown out this seeing as it was a different provience and it is over the recommended 7 year time. So if they put this on my credit now.. Do I have to pay it? Is there a limitation to how long they have to collect? How would I go about getting this off my credit now that they say it is there?

You already stated that your know that it is a recommended seven year period, so why ask here.

If they are pursuing you, then you obviously instituted the statue again by making a payment, but you don't have records, so you owe the debt and expect to hear about it as an ongoing occurrence from collection agencies who have bought the debt for so many cents on the dollar and will keep chasing you.

All you can do, is absolutely not respond to them, that encourages them to call more; they will eventually move on.

I think there is a seven year limitation... only because others have said this to me. The collector told my hubby that tgere is no limitationon this type of collection. This makes no sense to me. Why would tgey submit to collections 14 plus years later. I have not made any payment to them at all. They have contacted me out of the blue. I was pretty sure we paid this back in 1998 and was referring to those records or recipts. I know if I did have those I would have shredded them vecause it has been close to 15 years. I am inquiring because others have said it's a scam and not to pay it. I am worried its not a scam and it will be on my record and it will effect us for future things... like buying a house.

I do think we made the original fine payment. That's what I was referring to. And I do not have that reciot to prove that we did. I hooe that makes more sense to you on why I am asking this question.

It has gone way past the time they can legally collect on this old debt. It doesn't stop them from buying it for so many cents on the dollar and try. They will say anything to make you pay, at least once, and that is all they need. Once you make a payment after all this time, the statute starts all over again and you are stuck.

They will say anything. Don't talk to them. Don't answer their mail.
    They cannot legally collect now.

This will not effect your future purchases.
