    Stopping garnishment
    If you're on government aid, low income, single parent is there a way garnishment can be stopped?

    Hello midnight:

    Social Security cannot be garnished. Other types of aid can. Call the department who is issuing your checks and ask them to mail you checks instead of direct depositing them.

    Each nation ( canada, US, France, and so on) have their own rules, and if in the US, each state will have its own rules. Some states have rules that if you earn under a certain amount they can not garnish your pay, but many states they are allowed to take a percentage of your pay no matter how little it is.

    The way to stop it is of course first to go to the court hearing where they are wanting the garnishment to start with and try to deal with it there.
