My dog hurt his leg what can I give him for pain
My puppy hurt his paw. I think he got his nail caught on the carpet. It was bleeding but that has stopped but he is in pain. Is there anything I can give him for the pain? I don't have the money to take him to the vet until next Friday and I don't want him to hurt.

Take your dog to your vet if there is a problem. Your vet should sympathize with your financial situation and understand. It is irresponsible to let your pet suffer or give it anything that is not advised by your vet. There really is no quick fix, and there many be something else that you haven't noticed. Get a check-up, perhaps its nails trimmed. You want your puppy to grow up strong and healthy. Hope this helps.

Absolutely speak to a vet and have your puppy checked. This is painful! There are companies vets work with, such as Care Credit that can help you cover a bill until you can repay it. Your vet may also be able to work out payment arrangements.

And you don't want the injury to get worse and your pup end up with blood poisoning or some other problem.

There are no over the counter products that animals can take for pain. Not even a quick fix and the "wives tale" of giving a dog aspirin proves to still ulcerate the stomach lining.

qksnd is correct in the advise given. It sounds like a torn toe nail to me as well. Torn toe nails are pretty painful, but he's not going to die. He may be a little uncomfortable but he'll live until you can make it to a vet on Friday. As already suggested, try and wrap the foot after cleaning it well with dawn dish soap and warm water. He may actually be fine after you clean it and bandage it up. Typically bandages are put on for 2-3 days until the nail bed hardens and the quick (soft tissue) is not exposed.

A good way to ensure this doesn't happen again is to get a good lesson on how to trim toe nails. Puppy nails have a sharp hook on them and are very soft and can break easily on common things such as the carpet. Teaching him that its OK to have his feet messed with and his nails cut would be a good idea to prevent this problem.

I have a nine year old boxer and every now and then he holds his leg up like it's giving him a lot of discomfort.
