    Tax for education
    Hi there,

I am working at a university in H-1B visa status and my wife is in F-1 at the same university. My wife didn't have scholarship in one of terms in 2012, so she had to pay tuition on her own. I filled out a tuition reduction form to show my family member is taking classes. I know once we reach a certain amount in tuition the rest becomes taxable. We were notified by a staff, in Student Accounts, that we have a taxable amount, which has been added to my paycheck. In box 1 of my w2, the taxable amount has been included and in box 14 it shows tuition$$$$. My wife received a 1098T and the amount of required expenses is different from the tuition on my w2. So I think the tuition I paid is not included on her 1098T. I was wondering how and if I can get the tax for this tuition back? I tried to use H&R software but failed to find anywhere to type in the information of the tuition.

    Thanks

In order to properly assess your situation, I need to see the actual documents (Forms 1098-T and W-2).

If I do that, let me prepare the actual return, because this IS what I do. Please double-click on my name (Atlanta Tax Expert) above to access my profile. You will find my email address in the signature portion of the profile (scroll down to the BOTTOM of the page).

Hi! I was told that the interest from Series EE bonds was tax free if used for education. I read on the IRS site that the person must be 24 before the issue date to be eligible. Needless to say, our son is only 17 now, how can he use them tax free under these provisions?
