It could be an ulcer or what's called a "hot spot", which can be caused by skin allergies. In either case, it appears infected and your dog can quickly deteriorate if you do not take it to the vet for treatment.

From the fur in the photo I am wondering if this is a golden retriever? I had one who had a problem with hot spots. We had to be very attentive to treating her for allergies. We had medication from our vet and when she had flare ups we used steroids, which your dog may need now. We also had to change her food to a lamb and rice formula.

Do not try to figure this out and treat it yourselves though - your dog has a serious infection. It could also be a wound - perhaps she was impaled by a branch in the yard or someone shot her with a BB or an animal attacked her - hard to tell. In any event, take her to the vet immediately for assessment, treatment and antibiotics for the infection. The infection is obvious from the redness and puss - both clear indicators.

Thank you. She is at the vet as we speak, but I wanted to see if anyone had any experience with this type of skin issue. I have never seen anything like this before with our dogs, and I have had many dogs over the span of my life. If someone has seen this before, they may be able to provide another opinion. Just preparing in case our vet cannot identify what is going on.

I would seek a Vets help immediately. I am not a doctor, but this looks infected to me. Please get the dog to a Vet. You won't regret it. Best wishes, and good luck. I love dogs.

I'm reading that the dog is at the Vet as we post -

Hope OP comes back and lets us know. I once had a dog (and I've had a lot of dogs!) with something somewhat similar, and it was the result of a spider bite.
