Dash Board Message and Gauges Problem:2006 Saturn ION
Good morning! I own a 2006 Saturn ION with @89,000 miles. It is due for a tuneup, flush and fill, etc. and I do intend to take it in for maintenance. However, when I start the car, the gauges on the dashboard are not working properly, if at all. Specifically, I am receiving a variety of messages that are intermittently flashing (ie. PWR STR, NO TRAC, ERROR, etc.), the engine, battery, ABS, oil, Brake icons are also intermittently flashing, and I cannot read the gas, temperature, RP and odometer gauges as the needles are not advancing. I am therfore afraid to drive the car, although I was able to drive it around a parking lot. The battery works fine and does not seem to be linked to this problem.

Could this be a fuse or wiring problem, or is this possibly linked to a more complicated malfunction with the computer system? I hesitate to take this into a GM dealer for diagnostic if avoidable, due to high cost and dissatisfaction with prior service. Any advice will so greatly be appreciated. Thanks so much for your time and attention to my question. Have a wonderful day!

It may simply be a bad alternator. Most auto parts stores will test them for free.

Thank you so much for your response. The engine light is one of the icons that keeps coming on, then going off. Is a bad ground wire something that can be replaced at a regular auto shop, or does this require a trip to the dealer?

Thank you again and have a blessed day.

When you get NAPA to test your alternator, get them also to test/charge your battery. They should do it for free. Keep in mind that alternators are battery maintainers, not chargers. Always begin by knowing your battery is good.
