Can I be added as a coowner of a car without a signature
I live in Utah. Someone added me to the title of a car without my signing anything. Is this legal? I suspect my signature was forged. The car was involved in an accident and now I am being told I am liable.

What is your relationship to the other people who own the car ?

You hire an attorney and deny owning the car, you force them to prove it

And even if you did own the car, that wouldn't make you automatically liable for the accident anyway.

Here is what I now know... in the state of Utah, you can add anyone to your car title by using the "or" instead of "and". They don't need to sign anything or even have knowledge of it. It does give them legal rights to your car so the law figures that stops people from putting just anyone on their title that shouldn't be there. In the state of Utah, when you register that car, all the legal owners are required to carry insurance on that car. IF the car is in an accident, ALL the owners must provide proof of that insurance or possibly face fines, suspended license and/or even be required to carry SR22 insurance, even the one that didn't know about it.

Who told you that? I don't believe you have been given accurate advice. If the state is trying to fine you, or suspend your license, you should definitely see an attorney about fighting it.

That is what the state was trying to do. So I scheduleda hearing with a Hearing Officer who cleared me of the requirement to carry insurance once I provided undisputable proof that I had been added to the title without my knowledge. He did state however that though I should not be responsible for the accident, there is always the chance the other party could still try to make me responsible. Should that happen, yes I will see an attorney about fighting it. Scary though that there is such a large hole in the law to even allow this to happen in the first place.
