I have a pull chain light in our basement and I want to move it to a switch. What steps would I have to take?

You most likely will have to run another cable from the light to where you want the switch.

I would use a switch loop assuming there is power at the box -always is with a pull chain. Turn off power to light, install a wall box, switch and 14/2 wire to ceiling box. Disconnect hot lead to light, connect to white from new cable and mark white with black tape or magic marker. Connect black to light. Wire switch with black and white, black tape on white. Connect grounds. Turn power back on.Turn wall switch on and use pull chain to turn on light. Cut pull chain at ceiling fixture and use wall switch to turn light on and off. Very common install.
