I just removed a 1957 GE electric cooktop and installed the a new GE cooktop model#JP328WKWW. I got three wires come from breaker 2 black and 1 white. I use the volt meter to touch each black to the white wire, both gives me 120V. I think the 2 black is hot wires and the white one is neutral. The new cook top is for 208/240V and having 3 wires red, black, and bare wire. How should I connect the old wires to be able present a 240V to the new cooktop? Thanks

I just ask a friend, he told me I should first check the breaker and make sure the two black wire that coming from breaker is attach to the breaker and the white wire is attach somewhere to the ground. If the checking resault is same as he think, then I can connect one black to the red at cooktop and the other black to the black at cooktop and finally connect the white one to the bear wire as ground. If nothing happened this should give me a 240V output to the cooktop. I will try it tonight, if anyone has any comment for any possible suggestion, please kindly let me know. Thanks.

The advice you received is correct, with one thing to check.

If the white is connected to the neutral bar in the panel, which is also connected to the equipment ground at the panel, then the white may be used as the equipment ground, simply label it as ground with green tape at both ends.



A simple method of checking if the neutral is connected to ground at the panel is they will be only if the main breaker is located in this panel.

If not, then the white wire must be removed from the neutral bar, relocated to the equipment ground bar, and tape both ends green as before.

Thank you tkrussell, it works with 240V output now.
