Is there a good substitute for a driver's license in New York State
I am no longer driving (Age 80). My New York State driver's license is about to expire. Since I do need some sort of identification, can you advise about a substitute? Thanks so much toby z

Ask the DMV for a state issued ID card... it will be a LOT easier if you do it before your license expires.

I'm from NYS. Do they still offer a state ID that you can get at the DMV?

    Ah, here you go! --

    Non-Driver Photo ID Cards

A person of any age who does not have a driver license can apply to the DMV for a non-driver photo ID card (NDID). You must provide acceptable proofs of identity and date of birth. You can apply if your NYS driver license is suspended or revoked. When you apply for an NDID you must surrender your NYS driver license. There are no exceptions. You do not have to surrender an NDID when you get a driver license or your driver license is reinstated.

An NDID contains the same personal information, photo, signature and special protection against alteration and fraud as a photo driver license.

That's interesting. I wonder why New York won't allow one to have a DL and an ID at the same time. When I renewed my AK DL, they gave me an ID as well; I didn't even ask for it.

Yes NYS provides for a non DL ID, just talk to your local DMV.

I just called the a state DMV office in Westchester County, NY. The very nice lady I talked to said that no, a resident can't carry both IDs but didn't know why -- it's just a state law.

I just moved from MI to NYC but I will start work in NJ. Is the lease that I started for a place in NYC enough to prove my NY residency? Or do I have to also change my driver's license (which currently is from MI)? I am basically trying to figure out how to avoid having MI taxes still deducted...
