Isolated and want to talk to someone outside friends and family
I am living in London by myself studying Veterinary Medicine. At the beginning of my time here I felt fine, I loved my course and I still do but recently one of my best friends got diagnosed with a brain tumour. A few years ago I lost another one of my friends a few years ago in a car crash so understandably I'm really worrying about this. The thing is, because I live on my own I'm finding it really hard. I have the best friends ever but they don't live near me, and I have a boyfriend but he can understandably only come up to see me when he is hasn't got work. This puts a strain on us however, as when he does come and see me, the first thing I do is pour out all my worrys and problems to him. He is obviously happy to listen, but it means that when he visits I just pour out all my pent up emotions when I'd really just like to enjoy the time we spend together. I do ring my friends and I do talk to them online, but sometimes that just makes me more homesick. Often when I go home it makes coming back to being on my own worse too. I have wanted to be a vet my whole life so it is really frustrating me that after all this time, I am doing what I have always wanted but I'm having so much trouble settling in. I also have a huge workload so that is another thing I'm worrying about. Does anyone have any suggestions? After my friend died I suffered from depression for a while and I am desperate not to go there again. Thank you.

What about just venting on this site every time you feel sad or the need to vent

Someone always read and responds and even if they don't it just feels good to get all the bad feelings out in the open

    Chirstmas is coming soon
Maybe one or some of your frineds could come see you, maybe go out and meet some new people that live around you
Maybe some new friends could help get your mind off certain things

I have a few questions and then I'll give you some advise based on what you've already told us.

    1) Have you ever considered anti-depressants?
    2) Have you ever considered getting a room mate?
    3) Is there a school closer to home that teaches vet medicine? If so, can you transfer to that school?

Being homesick is natural, that's why it's home, because you miss it when you're not there.

It's never easy to be away from the ones you love, I know that all too well. I'm closest to my family in Germany, I live in Canada. I haven't seen then since 2001, and that trip involved losing my mother to cancer, so it wasn't exactly a pleasure trip. I miss them every day and I don't get to talk to them often. It's hard.

Add to that the fact that it's December and the Ho ho holidays are just around the corner, well, it's not an easy time of year.

The people on this site are great, so like Chikie said, come here, vent, let it all out. Cry, yell, scream, vent, throw things, whatever you want. Let it out here. Then get your arse on a plane and go see your family for Christmas. :)

Try to find a roommate to be friends with. They can also help pay the bills.

Tink, this thread is from 2009, and the poster never came back. I certainly hope she has figured things out since then.
