Sorry I missed you Cappy. I just checked out the web site link on your signature. I love that kind of stuff. Is this your creation, or is it just a web site you found?

I'm okay... thanks for all of the well wishes!

I just have had a very nasty cold that's kept me pretty much bed-bound for the last 3 days. I feel MUCH better today, but very tired all of the time.

I had no idea how much bad TV is on in the middle of the day, though. /shudders

LOL. Yes. Watching the garbage on TV can make you feel worse than you already do! I am glad you are feeling better. Fighting the infection really saps your strength. Look on the bright side -- hopefully you will be fully recovered in time to enjoy the weekend! :)

Lol... I'm just hoping that I don't get fired for missing 3 days of work!

I feel AWFUL about that, honestly. I've never missed 3 days in a row of work in my life.

LOL. Well, no one can accuse you of not having a good work ethic!
Just think of it this way... it is better that you are out of work then being there and making everyone else sick.
I hope you don't have a major backlog waiting for you when you get back.

It's a very small company... I feel bad that my co-workers had to pick up my slack!

But there shouldn't be much backlog, I wouldn't have been able to get any work done anyway, and I'm SURE they didn't want this gunk.

Yes, it is better that you stayed away, whether they realize it or not. I used to send people home that tried to drag their butts into the office.

Don't feel bad though. There is a silver lining to this. The tables will be turned at some point and you will be on the receiving end of picking up someone else's slack when they get sick.:p

lol... what a great bright side!

I'm pretty sure they know me well enough to know I wouldn't take 3 random days off for no reason. I've only been there 6 months, though, so I am a little nervous. I have a doctor's note, though!

I wish more bosses were like you... I HATE when people bring their germs to the office and then wonder why everyone is mad at them for doing so.

Haha. I KNOW! I am so susceptible to viruses and I always get sick no matter what I do. But, the bottom line is that the owners want everyone in whether they are sick or not. They would get angry at me for sending people home. But, since we had a paid sick day policy, I told them they had a choice, either pay someone who makes less money for sick days, or pay for my sick days when I inevitably got sick! :p

I can understand your concern. But, I am sure they have a pretty good handle on your work ethic by now and bringing in the doctor's note will definitely show them that you weren't fooling around. Once you are back in the swing of things, it won't be held against you. Especially if you have been consistent in your attendance. They will just be grateful you are back and okay.

Thanks, Ruby! You've made me feel a TON better about it.

Isn't it horrible that we live in a society where you feel guilty when you're sick?

Yes. There is a different work mentality than there used to be. The attitude is "Anyone can be replaced." That started in the '80s. It is amazing to me at how much of our benefits have decreased and yet, more is always expected of us. Then we wonder why we are so stressed as a society. I don't think I have met anyone outside of minimum wage workers, who isn't expected to handle the job of at least two people. And, with the advent of e-mails, cell phones, and blackberries, there isn't any time to sit and do your work without being interrupted every few minutes. I used to work in NYC. Talk about stress and guilt! Ack! I was always getting sick.

I was just recently thinking about how much more I liked my job(s) when I had less responsibility. The increase in pay is nice, but it sometimes feels like I should be making more for all that I'm doing!

That is the problem. The owners think they are being very generous and expect that their workers should be grateful and want to put in overtime. The bottom line is always their profit margin. They need to keep the amount of employees low to accomplish that. So, they throw a few extra bucks your way and act hurt when someone suggests it isn't enough for the job they are doing. We are fast becoming a nation of the haves and the have nots.

Personally, I have gotten to the point in my life that I would rather make less money, have less responsibility, so I can enjoy my life. I am looking to downsize and get rid of a lot of the "stuff". I realize I don't need that much. I would rather enjoy my friends and doing work for the local animal shelters. It is a lot more gratifying to me. And, I just want to have a bit of fun which working the way I was, didn't allow me to. But, then again, I am not starting in life. I am kind of winding down. So, I have a different perspective and financial needs, than someone in their 20's or 30's.

BTW, if I don't respond to you, it means I had to shut down. Online traffic is getting very heavy and I am having trouble accessing the longer threads.

No worries about a lack of response, ever :) I usually leave this board behind when I go home for the day, myself.

I love how employers talk about a lack of employee loyalty, and complain when someone they "nurtured" for a position leaves for more money/better benefits.

I'm perfectly happy to put my all into my job most days, and stay late and help out where needed... but if/when we start a family, then I'll be punching out on time and actually TAKING my vacations. I hate how that will put me at a disadvantage, but priorities are priorities!
