We have a leak in the ceiling between the first floor and second floor. We had a plumber come out in April when the leak appeared, he cut a hole in the ceiling and searched for what could be leaking. There was no water anywhere. So they re- drywalled the hole, and now 6 months later a leak appeared again. No one can figure out where the water is coming from. Any ideas?

What is above ceiling?

What type of heat do you have?

Are there any water lines running in ceiling?

Is this near an outside wall?

These are just a few questions we need answered to help you.

The ceiling is drywall. Both bathrooms are above the kitchen, but when it happened the first time around, they plugged the sinks and showers and than let the water run out to see if anything came out, but there was no water. The water leak is basically in the center of the kitchen.. We have electric heat. I live in South Jersey where Sandy hit, two weeks ago, but there wasn't a leak after that.

Presently yes, but it seems to be drying.

Plugging the drains will tell you that the leak is not in the waste line.

Starting at the bottom row of tiles where they meet the tub/shower, run water for about 5 minutes. This is best done with a hose or hand held shower head. It would also be easier to see if wet sheetrock is removed.

If no leak shows, move up one line of tile and repeat. This will give you the location of leak if through the grout.

Pay special attention to the corners.
