Our kitchen sink is directly over our washer in the cellar. While washing clothes we heard a gurgling in the kitchen. I used the plunger on the kitchen sink. I went to the cellar and ran a snake almost all the way to the septic tank with no resistance at all.

Later, the toilets almost overflowed and water spilled all over the washroom from the washing machine.

A friend said that my roof vent is probably plugged so I went up and ran a hard chimney sweep rod down until I met resistance at about 12 feet (the plumbing ends two stories below in the cellar). If the roof vent pipe is clear shouldn't I be able to run the rod all the way down to the cellar.. about 25 feet? I'm afraid I'll break something trying to jam the rod down the roof vent. I'm really pounding away and have not broken through. Keep pounding? Help?

First off using a chimney sweep to snake a vent makes as much sense as using a sewer machine to clean your . Chimney.

STOP!! you're about to destroy your vent, And if you think you had problems with a clogged vent just wait until you get the bill from the plumber when he has to teat into your walls to replace everything you've broken. If you haven't broken anything yet then rent a sewer machine and snake the vent, Put out enough snake to reach the basement and 15 feet more. If the toilet's still acting up after you snake then click on back, Good luck, Tom
