    Open wound
Earlier this year, I underwent a surgery that required the removal of mesh and repair of the colon. After 3 weeks in the hospital, I was sent home with a vacuum to assist in the closing of the surgical wound. After a week with the vacuum, the device was disconnected and I was left to heal on my own.

The wound appeared to be healing nicely until I was moving. I did not lift any items that were heavy, but the bending and twisting during the packing opened a small area in the scar area. At least this is what I thought.

I have been treating the open wound just like I was told to do after my surgery. The wound has increased in size during the last couple of month. The wound started the size of the tip of a pencil. Earlier this week the wound was the size of a pencil eraser. I have kept the wound covered and I change the bandage 3 times a day. I went to the dr. and was told I was doing the proper techniques for keeping the wound dry and clean.

Now this morning (only 4 days later) the wound is burning and has grown to the size of a ping pong ball. I called the physician and was told this is normal. I know it is not normal, I have had many experiences with wounds and such. I have also had MRSA 3 times in previous surgical wounds. I am now becoming concerned with the way this wound is expanding. Any other ideas?

I've had cellulitis (MRSA's cousin) and agree with you that the wound getting bigger doesn't sound right. Is there another doctor to consult?

I have seen 2 different physicians today and was told to keep doing what I am doing... this is just frustrating. The burning sensation and where the wound is located is just below my waist and clothing is rubbing the wound and creating more pain

Are you keeping the wound moist? I had an abscess after my cellulitis treatment and was told by my infectious diseases doctor that moist wounds heal much faster than dry ones do. He gave me a cleanser and a salve for it and then covered it with gauze pads and paper tape that didn't pull off my skin when removed.

Did you receive antibiotic treatment at all?
