ATF, the feds, take this seriously. What did they charge him with? Felons can't have any gun, especially unregistered. Is he on probation at this time?

He's a felon, and he was caught with unregistered guns. He'll likely go to jail.

The Feds won't care, however, whether the firearm was registered. The federal government doesn't require registration of firearms (except fully automatic weapons) and registration is only required in some states anyway.

Hello H:
If the local cops run it by the feds, they'll charge him... I believe a felon in possession of a firearm is a mandatory 5 years.

Would he have to do the whole 5 years? And is it most likely that the feds will pick it up?

He will get 5 years, most likely get out on 3.
It is easier to convict in Federal Court, so if the State case is weak, some issue with procedure, then they often turn it over to the Feds. Also if they want him to do longer time, they may turn it over to the Feds.
I had a family member, who was a convicted felon on probation, they caught him with a gun in his home. Now the gun was non firing, ( rusted shut) and used as a wall hanging.
So they state was looking like they would lose the case because it was not a working gun.
They turned it over to the Feds where the issue of currently working was not a issue.
** He was a drug dealer, who they could not catch with the drugs.
