Put it in another room and shut the door or make sure there is a tight seal on the lid. He should not be allowed to dig inside it.

He can open the door! As I said he only does it now and again it's usually when we've just left.

You really only have two options,
Keep the dog away from the garbage or
Keep the garbage away from the dog.
What about a bin under the sink cabinet or some other area that you can close up and put a safety latch on?

All dogs will dig in the garbage if the garbage is accessible.

Buy a better garbage can, and make sure all garbage is placed in that can. I currently have one with a very tight seal, only accessible by putting your foot on a pedal. Thankfully the smarty 6 month old border collie hasn't figure out the foot pedal yet. YET!

Fact is, the dog is a dog. Garbage and dogs, it's a given.

You have to make the garbage less accessible, or kennel the dog when you're not home so he doesn't have access.

You have to be the one to keep it away from him. He's a dog, he doesn't know any better. You, as a human, do.
