Am I responsible?
My husband and I separated in the beginning of August. It became very messy, very fast. I now have an order of protection against him and he is not allowed within 1000ft of me or my residence. He had the cable disconnected and I had to have the cable company come to the apartment and set up a new account in my name- the previous account was in his name. They have shut my cable off because he didn't pay the balance he left on the previous account. They are telling me I am responsible if I want my cable turned back on. They are rationalizing this by saying that because I lived in the residence during the time the previous contract was in effect and I was married to the contract holder I am responsible. I should also tell you, that when we separated in August I was forced to leave the apartment by my ex and was not living there for more than half the month before the order of protection went into effect. Am I really responsible for his unpaid bill?

Can they sue you to collect the money ? NO, you legally do not have to pay.
BUT, they may deny your service and refuse to allow you service unless you pay it.
So go find another cable or TV service to use.

Thanks chuck,
I have looked into other cable companies, however where I live, there are only 2 available and per my landlord I am not allowed to have a dish. My ex has closed all joint bank accounts and I have been a stay at home mom to our 2 children for the last 3 years. I am 25 yrs old and only have some college, and have not been able to find work just yet.. So paying an additional bill is just not possible for me right now; well paying any bills is proving to be quite impossible. Not sure if there is any way I can get out of this.
Thanks,
Kayla

Not really, you can try to keep calling and calling to talk to someone in customer service ( or lack of it) when they say no, ask for a supervisor.
After 10 or 12 calls sometimes someone may say yes, you may get a single mother who understands, or a guy who may hear you almost cry ( cheesy but what the heck) tell the story about your child missing TV.
Explain you were not living there, but separated .

I was literally on the phone for 5 hours with them yesterday trying to do just that, I spoke to probably 6 different people with no luck. I even said I was going to close my account out. I will keep at it though, maybe eventually I will find someone willing to help! Thank you for your advice!
