After my central air conditioner works a long time to get to the set temperature, when it s off and then restarts when temperature rises the circuit breaker pops. I had a booster installed but did not help. So this week I installed a super booster but it started the fan but not the compressor. So I shut off the system for two hours and the compressor worked fine. Now over the weekend I kept the thermostat on 74 so it did not have to work too long at a time and it worked fine. My question is what could be the problem and how can I repair it?

What type of thermostat do you have? Is it digital? If not, and it is a fairly old stat, I would suggest upgrading the stat to a digital with a time delay for a/c. Or you could simply add a time delay to the condenser low voltage wiring. What happens many times is the call for cooling ends, then it calls for cooling again in a short period. What happens here is the refrigerant in the system doesn't have time to equalize, and so the compressor is trying to start up again a high head pressure, drawing extremely high amps, thus tripping the breaker. A time delay (usually five minutes) eliminates this problem. Also, super boosts are just fine, but you need to also make sure the actuall compressor run capacitor is good. The super boost will start the compressor, but if the run cap is bad, the compressor won't run right, will overheat causing high amp draw, and eventually shut down on internal overload.

So, basically look into a time delay for the condenser (most new digital stats have them built in for a/c and are preset at five minutes,, go honeywell when looking for a new stat). Make sure you condenser coils are clean to prevent overheating and high amp draw, keep the super boost, but make sure that the original capacitor is good.

Thank You Very Much. Your answer seems to be correct but I noticed that I will have this problem more often when the room where the stat is the temperature will be like 79 plus it is very hot outside then the air conditioner has to work very very long until it gets to like 70 - 72 then five minutes of cool off will not be enough to equalize. Also why when I got the new super booster the fan in the condenser unit started working but not the compressor doesn't it go together?
