L-1 Visa, filing from outside US
    Hi,

My husband had an L-1B Visa and I had L-2. I did not earn income, two kids to look after! We are both Irish citizens. Last year we moved from Texas in March to New Zealand. Therefore, taxes were paid for Jan, Feb and part of March. Our move to New Zealand is permanent for the foreseeable future.

My questions are can I simply e-file our return for those few months or do I need to get into a whole lot of jiggling with part year here and part year there? Basically, is this just a straight forward case of "file your return like normal" or is it very complicated. If it is complicated, any advice, please?

    Thanks in advance,
    N

You must file an expatriate dual-status return, filing BOTH Forms 1040NR and 1040. You will pay taxes ONLY on income earned in the U.S.

This is NOT a return for amateurs, In my opinion. Best you get professional tax help. If you want my help, contact me at the email listed below. I have already done returns for residents of India, China, Japan and Germany so far this year. It WILL take some time (due to mailing distances; a dual-status return CANNOT be filed on-line), but it IS doable.
