    Osteoporosis Medication Concerns
My latest bone density shows I am at a high risk for bone fractures of the spine. Hips OK. My doctor (who is new) gave me a scrip for Fosamax
(Alendronate). I have not read one good thing regarding this medication and I am extremely nervous about even the thought of taking it. When I questioned my doctor about my concerns his attitude was "take it or don't." He did not put me at ease what so ever. He also stated I would be on this med for 5 years then off for two.
Not only the side effects listed it also seems one is at a higher risk for hip fractures taking the medication. I have also read "bisphosphonates" disrupt normal bone growth. Your bone density is higher, yet the bone's are not structurally sound.
My fears are what my happen if I do not take this medication but more so what can happen if I do. I guess I am looking for some positive feed-back.
    Thank you...

    I'd get a second opinion.

You also need to decide whether the side effects are worth the benefits.

I don't know what I would do - my late husband was a Pharmacist and I always discussed my prescriptions with him. I don't know if a Pharmacist would have handouts or information - I know a Pharmacist won't second guess a Physician.

My girlfriend suggested talking with my Pharmacist but as you have commented they are not about to second guess a Physician.

I am 54 and small frame, caucasian female and unfortunately a smoker. In 2004 I had a bone density which showed I had advanced osteoporosis.
