    Stinking bathroom
Recently had the bathroom upgraded. Now it smells like a sewer, really bad at some times.

Likely the wax ring seal under the toilet was damaged or forgotten...

Also check and make certain you see a P-trap under the sink, (and under the tub or shower) if you have access from below.

Please explain, in detail, what was done to your bathroom. Where's the smell the worse? Toilet base? Tub and shower drain? Where? Back to you, Tom

Lol... room so small, it's consumed by the smell.

The entire room was redone. Since tile was installed the commode was taken off and left off for days. We converted the tub into a walk in shower and had new drain pipes put in.

I feel like gases are backing up from the sewer pipes or something.

That's what P traps are for... the wax ring on a toilet is actually on the sewer side of its P trap which is built into the toilet.

THe water forms a seal which prevents sewer gas from entering the room... the one on the toilet looks different than the picture but it really is the same.

Here is a wax ring seal being put on the waste stack flange under the toilet.

Here is what a P-trap is.

Thank's for the info, we'll replace it and hopefully that will do the trick. Do you think it was replaced incorrectly? I know it was installed because I watched him

Its beeswax... its not like foam rubber it doesn't spring back once its deformed so its possible it was damaged.

Its really not expensive... but a little time consuming draining the toilet etc... just be VERY careful to not over tighten the toilet putting it back... the toilet WILL break if you do.

Cats stinking outside of the box [ 2 Answers ]

We have two older male cats (both neutered). Until recently, they both used the litter box correctly. Now on occasion, one of them, urinates and or poops just outside the box. Why would they do this and what can we do to change the behavior of stinking outside the box?
