I had to change the guts in my toilet . And when I tried to turn the shut off valve back on no water filled the toilet. Did the shut off valve go bad?

Hi Beth

The only way to tell if the shutoff went bad would be to disconnect the toilet supply tube and put a towel over the shutoff and turn it on... ;)

If water goes through the shutoff then the issue will be up in the new fill valve... happens sometimes. Here, reconnect the water supply tube, but DO NOT turn the water back on at this time. Then, if you have a fluidmaster fill valve, push down on the cap and twist to disassemble it. Pull the black washer you'll find up and out and clean it... pulse the water on for a second or two (put plastic cup over the valve) to remove any sediment. Reassemble the cap assembly (push down) and then turn the water supply back on and test that all is correct no.

If you have a fill valve with screws, remove these to access the washer and then follow the instructions above to clear the fill valve.

Set the water level to about 1-2"to 1" below the overflow tube and you should be all set here!

To answer Marks question see the image below and tell us which fill valve do you have.

As Mark says if water goes through problem is with fill valve if not then problem is with angle valve see the next image below, Thanks.

Great minds think alike, Both John and Mark think, as do I, that in replacing the ballcock you've disturbed some minerals built up in the pipe walls and now it's clogging the fill valve, Let us know what you've changed out and we'll walk you threw flushing it out. Back to you, Tom
