Hello. I am trying to wire up a Hampton Bay remote to a Homestead Wind fan. The wires that go to the motor are purple and red. When I hooked up the remote, it would only run the fan in one direction, and even when the fan was not spinning there seemed to be a hum in the motor.

There are 2 pieces in the canopy which I think might be capacitors.

I searched the web and I think Homestead may be out of business.

I forgot to mention that the fan is about 25 years old, and was in the house when we bought it. I have the manual but not the wiring diagram.
