Buzzing in thermostat - A/C unit not working

My thermostat is making a humming/buzzing sound when it tries to turn on my A/C unit. The thermostat clicks for the temperature, then hums/buzzes, but unit does not respond. Therefore, no cooling! Is this something simple that I can fix, or should I call in the professionals?
