I am currently looking for work in the job market. Back in 2009 I went to work for a small company and was on the payroll for 1 year. Then in Sept. 2010 there was a layoff but the owners wanted me to stay on as a 1099 independent contractor. However they did not make me fill out any 1099 documentation. I left in April 2011 to pursue other opportunities. On my resume I state that I was working with the firm from Sept. 2009-April 2011. When I fill out an application I always put down that I was on a salary from Sept. 2009-2010 then from October 2010 was working as a 1099. Would that show up as a red flag when they do a background check? I know that most background checks do criminal, credit etc. but they also can call the employer if you have it filled out on your application. I did not know if there was a way that background checks could actually check your employment history.

They call the old employee and ask then when you worked there, what was your pay, hours and if they would rehire and reason for termination.
