    Automatic transmission linkage problems on 96 ford taurus
    Column shifter does not engage transmission.

    The linkage to the Transmission Range Sensor (TRS), which is located on top of the transmission, may have come loose. Otherwise, you may have to remove the knee bolster, lower the steering column, and repair the shifter mechanism.
