The need for conduit for kaiser Al wire4/0 Awg XLPE 600v XHHW E-90488
Does xhhw wire for underground application need conduit? It is48" deep trench. The conduit has been broken, about 20", and it's about 100' from the box. Can it be repaired without pulling the wire out? What abou if some water gets into the conduit? Any suggestion will be apreciated.
    Thanks.

XHHW is not rated to be in direct contact with earth, but is rated for wet locations.

The damaged conduit needs to be excavated and exposed, the wire pulled out, repair the conduit, and if in perfect condition ,re-install the wire.If the insulation on the wire is damaged, new wire is required.
