    Credit card debt/ontario canada
I have been hounded by a collection agency at home and at work for a credit card debt of $5700.00. Being a single mom, money is tight (I do have a full time job) and I cannot afford to pay the full amount right away. Every time I have a little extra money, I make a payment (sometimes only $100 a month), but they continue to call and call and call.
    I have a few questions:
    1. Can I get them to stop calling me at work?
    2. Can they take me to court to garnish my wages? I am not paying the minimum payments but I am trying to pay it off.
    3. Is it better to take their calls or ignore them?

    Any responses are greatly appreciated!

How old is the debt ?
Write them and tell them not to contract you by phone any longer

It is better to offer them a payment plan in writing, but only if you can pay it.

The debt is only 1 year old but I am unsure that a payment plan could be agreed upon. I only pay any extra money that I have, if I put a certain amount in writing and I cannot pay that, would that not cause problems?

Please understand what a garnishment of your pay could be, so it may be time to look closer at your budget,

I will assume you lost a better job or a second job and did not merely borrow money without an ability to pay

Yes, loss of a second job. I appreciate the honest answer, I will look at my budget again and tighten up even more. I cannot risk a garnishment of my wages.

I don't think ignoring their calls is the answer... Its always best to acknowledge their call, set up a plan with them, you never know, maybe they will be willing to let go of half the debt if they see you are trying to pay it off instead of not answering their calls... Just be honest with them, maybe get them to lower your interest rate... anything is possible, but you never know unless you ask...

My daughter has an outstanding credit card debt from the late '90's. She received a letter from a lawyer threating her with court action. She is on a disability pension. Can she be sued/garnisheed or is this a scare tactic from a collection agency? Tks for your input
