How do I find out if I truly have a grandchild that was adopted out
I have just been informed that I had a grandchild born in 2006 and she was placed for adoption. I really don't believe it but I would like to know for sure. How can I find out the truth. This is the first I have ever known of this as well as my son.

You can sign up on the 'adoption reunited register' for the state or county where the adoption took place and if their bio parents have signed the register [or possibly someone from the family] stating their desire to be reunited then a meeting will be arranged.

Most adoption records are sealed permanently; however, many states are relaxing their laws on sealed adoption records. Some states, such as Alaska, Alabama, Oregon, Kansas, Maine, New Hampshire, and Tennessee, allow birth certificates to be easily accessed by adult adoptees. Other states make birth certificates accessible to adoptees born before or after a certain year, while still others require a court order. So depending on what state the adoption took place in, you may be able to just request the records and send payment for the copies.

Go here to see how your state handles adoption records:

You can also check Cyndi's List for reuniting

An adoption needed your son's consent. This is the first he's heard of it?

I've never seen a six year old on an adoption registry.

    Adoption records are sealed.

There is always the possibility that the mother had multiple partners, DNA showed that your son was not the father and the real father signed the adoption consent.

What is your purpose? Locating the child? You have no rights here, nor does he.

I would contact an Attorney, but I doubt it will make a difference IF this was a legal adoption, approved by the Court.

Apparently your son was told she was pregnant, she then said she had an abortion, he didn't pay for the "abortion" or have further contact with her?

He didn't go WITH her for the abortion?

Sounds like there's irresponsibility on BOTH sides. Any guy that walks away from a girl who says she's pregnant and doesn't help and support her through her choices frankly deserves what he gets--whether that's child support years later or finding out that the child was placed for adoption.

No court is going to award your son custody of a child that has been placed with an adoptive family for SIX YEARS.

What you do now is WAIT. You wait until the child is 18, and then put yourselves out there on adoption reunion sites.
