No cold water through a shower
Help...
Only hot water goes through the shower in this bathroom. The cold water in the faucet is working fine in the same bath room.
The shower in another bathroom is working fine.
The shower has one handle, the house is 13 years old, I guess the plumbing are also the same age.
Any help is appreciated!!

The shower mixing valve has gone bad. Maybe a twenty dollar part.
Remove handle. See a screw, take screw out, take handle out. See mixing valve, Need special tool.
BEFORE... make sure both hot and cold water to house is shut off (water all). Buy the tool at the hardware store, need that special tool, it comes with instructions.
Hope this helps. I've had the same problem. This worked. Good luck!

Hi Nourish,
I removed the handle, and found the whole thing (pipes, valves, etc) sit inside the wall, only a small hole is accessible for the handle to be connected outside the wall.
Does the "special tool" need me to tear down the wall (or dig a bigger hole) ? Is the "special tool" something that I can buy from Home Depot? What would be the price range for that?
Appreciate your answers...

I too would like to know the name of this "special tool". But more important we need to know the brand name of the valve and its age before we can even recommend any kind of a tool. Moen makes a cartridge puller, is that the "special tool" that you're referring to? Cheers, Tom

Thank you speedball1 and Nourish! I managed to fix the shower mixing valve problem by using the hints you both provided.
Let me quickly summarize the solution.
I bought a cartridge puller from HomeDeport, pull out the old mixing value using the cartridge puller. If you don't have the puller, you probably won't be able to get the value out unless you are a Pro.
After that, I bought a new mixing valve and replaced it. I did not see anything wrong with the old valve, but since it does not work for some reason, I just simply replaced it with the new one. Now I have a happy shower!
Appreciate all your helps! May God bless you.

There were two brands available for replacement cartridge, one from Moen (made in USA), another one from DANCO (made in Japan). I chose Danco which is less expensive.

If you call moen customer service next time you can get genuine moen free. They carry a lifetime warranty. Danco is OK but don't tell moen you did it.
