    Claiming spouse from columbia on taxes
    Married a lady from columbia last year and want to know how do I claim her on my taxes?

    You can file jointly with her, but that will require she apply for an Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN) by submitting Form W-7 with the tax return.

    The IRS just changed the submission process. They now require that the photocopy of the passport be certified as a true copy by the country which issued the passport. If your wife is here in the U.S. this must be done at the home country's embassy or consulate, which may be an issue if you do not live in a city with such a consulate.
