Are 2 cups of dry dog food a day adequate for a Golden Lab who is a bit overweight?
Our Golden Lab is 8 years old, and has lost some weight, but needs to lose a bit more. She weighs 95 pounds, and we feed her 2 cups of dry food a day... is this enough for her? She doesn't get a lot of exercise.

I have an 8 year old overweight dog as well who only eats 2 cups of food a day. She is not a very active dog and does OK on it.

If your dog seems to be starving hungry all the time, then I would up it to 1.5 cups twice a day (3 cups of food total for the day) and see how she is.

I realize she has lost weight, but have you checked her thyroid levels? Her being a lab, overweight and not active spell out thyroid problems. Its not a very expensive test, it'd definitely be worth checking out.

Also.. what are you feeding her? 2 cups of food on a lower grade quality of food will make her hungry. If you up her to a better quality food, such as Pro-plan, Innova, Taste of the Wild, Wellness, etc. she might not act so hungry.

Wet dog food and dry dog food [ 5 Answers ]

Someone told me that I should be giving a balance of wet dog food and dry dog food each week and not just dry dog food all the time. He told me that too much dry food can cause constipation. Is this true? Also, which brands are considered low grade dog food?
