Problems with the landlord repairing sewage..
Where I live we have a maintenance person to fix any problems. Around 2 months ago I call telling them everything was backed up. They came out and dug up the tank and pumped it. However, they left the tank open stating to me they were going to have to get a tractor to dig up and find the lines. I have been waiting ever since then. Each week I go to the office to remind them. Last week the smell returned and now it is making the children and I sick at our stomachs. I have told them 3 times since then. Rent is due on the 1st. Can I take the rent money and hire someone to come do the job? What are my rights because clearly we can't live in the conditions? I sign a lease and if I moved it would break the lease on my behalf because of leaving early. I'm never late paying the rent and I have a receipts. What are my rights? Please help!

Maybe. The answer would depend on what state or country you are in.

Write them a letter stating that you have been asking for several weeks to have the repairs done. That the problem is creating an uninhabitable condition. That you will not pay your rent until the problem is fixed and if its not fixed in another week that you will use the rent to get it fixed.
