Frost and melted ice problems in my GE side by side, Technicians can't seem to help.
I am having a real problem with my GE side by side refrigerator that I've seen many people also have on this board. Had two technicians out here who told me that it was fine after replacing my ice maker solenoid (I had only crushed ice) and when I still had frost problems and the ice was still freezing solid, I had the ice flapper replaced and ice dispenser door solenoid replaced and still am having frost in the middle of the freezer, ice around the dispenser chute and the ice is melting together. The techs said that they checked it with the computer and everything was fine. I then went and defrosted the coils which were iced over and will see if that is the problem. One of them said my refrigerator was "naughty" and the other said that maybe I was standing with the door open too long. UGH! The door seals are fine.

    My model is
    GE GSH25JFTABB

I am really frustrated because now after the repair techs told me that the icemaker was fine and I could use it, we used it and we had to keep stopping and taking it out and unloosening the frozen ice and now the ice maker is making grinding sounds. I am afraid the ice auger is now going out. We actually quit using it after a day or so after they FIXED it because with the ice cubes still frozen together it was useless and appeared to be wearing out the auger. I am now well over $250 into this repair. This gal would love some help please!

It sounds like an air leak or a thermistor bad that terminates the defrost cycle. I would check the thermistors with an ohm meter because they control the temperature. You will probably have to buy a service manual for this model. Go here: ApplianceJunk.com - Service Manuals
When you find the correct service manual buy it and write back or send an email. If I have a copy I may be able to help you. Otherwise, go to the company parts web site and purchase a manual on PDF file. You can also find other sites that sell that manual. You cannot check it out without the manual.

I ended up calling a GE consumer line and they sent a tech out. It was the motherboard and the thermistor. He had three machines hooked up to it. He was great and because I had so many problems with it, they waived the service fee and gave me 50% off parts and labor saving me $210 and it ended up costing me $110. So now it is great. I suppose I didn't need to replace the flap and ice dispenser solenoid, but now it's good for a few more year. Thanks for all your help. I've learned a lot and hopefully I can take a break for the rest of the summer. I've spent at least 30 hours looking at this stuff! Thanks again!

I'm glad you got it fixed. I have been a refrigeration technician since 1982 and the most reliable units are the analog units. No one would want to have thousands of dollars of meats, etc. relying on such shoddy equipment. The only place I would see digital things was on a dairy tank, and all that did was to display the temperature and agitate the milk; the cooling was controlled by a regular thermostat. Make sure you clean the coils on that refrigerator twice a year or you will quickly burn up a compressor.

I will do that! It was a real headache but I sure do appreciate and respect the work of someone who knows what they are doing. They are worth their weight in gold. My husband has a PHD in Education but all he can do is stare at anything mechanical... I'm the one trying to fix anything so for all you guys out there keeping this world running, my hats off to you! We couldn't do it without you and I never forget it! Thanks again guys! You are the BEST! :)
