If you are talking about the temperature, pressure relief valve (T&P valve) replace it with new one, but find out why it is leaking, the T&P valve might be bad, you may have too much water pressure and need a pressure regulater and/or a thermal expansion tank or tank temperature is too hot. Most likely just the T&P valve is bad, but you should check out the other concerns.

The water heater is 15 years old and last time I drained it it didn't seem like 55gal. I think some of the residue has calcified but I fear it is on it's last leg, and beyond my capabilities. Thanks for your response.

I deserved that one Chuck. I don't even think I was calling it by the proper term. However,
I've drained the unit and filled it back up, though I think that 15 yr.'s is a lot to expect from my Rheem unit. But cudo's to them for making it this long. I think I'll put another one in.

If the only thing wrong is the pressure relief valve, I would not replace the whole heater.

I have a customer who's water heater is about 25 years old.

U should flush it once a month for about 5 minutes. This will remove the crud from bottom of tank. Hook a hose to the drain valve and leave the cold water feed on.

My under the counter water heater came with the house when it was built in 1954. But I'm left wondering what caused lupshews T&P valve to open up in the first place. Was it really a bad valve or was another issue? Too much pressure? Temp? Guess well find out if he replaces the valve and it still leaks. Good luck, Tom
