My son, his girlfriend and their baby rented an apartment and I co-signed. At the end of the lease, he signed a new lease without his girlfriends signature or mine. They are now informing me that my signature as co-signer automatically goes to the re-newed lease. I planned on having them sign their own lease after they lived there for a year. This does not seem right. Their relationship is going south and my husband and I need to retire. Our son has obvious problems and we have tried to help him out as much as possible but we've decided to let him face the music. What can we do to protect ourselves from our son alcoholism and inability to hold a job? We have been paying most of their rent since the beginning of the lease. We have worked our entire lives to maintain a good credit rating and to have a good life.
What can we do. We live in Idaho.
