What are my options in court?
So trying to make a long story short, my husband, cousin, and his girlfriend decided to go out to a bar we have never been to before. At the end of the night, my cousin ended up getting punched in the face because his girlfriend was leading another guy on and then blew him off. The guy's brother came over and I didn't know whether he would help punch my cousin or hold back his brother, so I blocked both of them from getting to my cousin. For some reason, they both kept coming at him but I wouldn't let them through. This is while my husband was helping my cousin and trying to block them too. I'm a girl so I figured he wouldn't touch me and he didn't. He kept apologizing for his brother but for some reason he wouldn't back down. My cousin never got a chance to hit back because he was in the ground bleeding from his lip and nose. But the brother did take his out and told me to, "Suck it, " when I told him to relax and go find another girl to get laid. That was six months ago and the court case is tomorrow. He did apoloize the next day (before he even knew we filed a police report) saying he was an idiot and drank too much. From what His lawyer told my friend, he was jailed and fined on assault but now he also has to register as a sex offender because he showes me his genitals. Now what options do I have? I feel the jail and fine was enough, I personally feel like he doesn't deserve to be on the sex offender registry for the rest of his life with all the rapists and child molestors. What options do I have to stop that? We live in Maine, are there any legal issues I should know?

You have no rights to do anything, you did not have him charged, and even if you did, it is not your choice to drop charges. What he did was a lot more than many sex offenders do, I know men who serve time in prison and are sex offenders for the rest of their life for merely urinating behind a building and someone sees them.

You can go talk to the DA but I don't expect it to do much good.

    Hello b:

What makes you think it's stocked with rapists?? I think MOST of 'em are people like your friend. You STOP that by making sure he isn't convicted of a sex offense... You DO have a good lawyer for him, don't you?
